Throughout the movie, the two detectives have many mishaps, including chases through back alleys, explosions and car chases. Carter teaches Lee about American culture, while Lee teaches Carter about chinese. As they navigate the streets of Los Angeles, they interact with each other in a way that is funny and serious at the same time. Between the two of them, they complete a comedic team not seen since Lethal Weapon. His counterpart, Carter, is played by Chris Tucker. Jackie Chan plays Lee, the chinese officer in Rush Hour. Lee is very emotional about finding this little girl, because he made a promise to his friend, and is determined to keep his word. No one knows exactly who this man is, so Lee and Carter must discover who is behind this conspiracy, in the process of finding the little girl before she is used as a pawn. Throughout the course of their investigation, Carter and Lee learn that the kidnapping is part of a larger conspiracy, and the man in charge is a phantom. Carter decides to ignore his orders, and instead help Lee find out who kidnapped the little girl, and try to get her back. His bosses don't agree, though, and instead enlist him in escorting Lee back to the airport to send him home. Carter learns about the kidnapping, and is determined to help. At the beginning of the movie, Carter and Lee both make mistakes which put them on probation at their jobs. He runs into Carter in the course of his investigation, and they team up to catch the kidnappers. Lee is friends with the consul, and is determined to find his friend's daughter, and bring the kidnappers to justice. Who is going to help? Rush Hour centers around an investigation into this kidnapping conducted by a LAPD officer Carter, and a chinese officer Lee. A chinese consul's daughter is kidnapped, and a ransom is asked for.
